Spotlights

Spotlights are surface-mounted fittings with adjustable heads, so you can point the light exactly where you want it. Fixed to the ceiling or wall on a plate or bar, they're the flexible way to add task and accent light, whether you're lighting a kitchen worktop, a piece of art or a run of shelves. Because they sit on the surface, there's no cutting into the ceiling, which makes them ideal where recessed downlights won't work.

What are spotlights?

A spotlight is a plate that mounts to the ceiling or wall, with one or more directional heads attached. Each head tilts and turns, so you can aim the beams independently, at a worktop, a painting or a reading chair. They come as a single spot or as bars and plates holding three, four or six heads for lighting a whole area from one fixing.

Spotlights or recessed downlights?

Both give focused, directional light, but they fit differently. Recessed downlights sit flush in the ceiling for the cleanest look, but they need holes cut and usually fire-rating. Surface spotlights fix straight on, with no cutting, which suits concrete ceilings, rented homes or anywhere you can't recess, and the heads adjust so you're not locked into a fixed grid.

Single spot or a spotlight bar?

A single spot is perfect for lighting one thing, a picture, a nook or a work area. A bar or plate with three, four or six heads covers a bigger space from one fixing and one connection, so a 3 or 6-spot bar is a tidy way to light a kitchen, hallway or open-plan room without a full grid of downlights.

Where do spotlights work best?

• Kitchens: aim the heads at worktops, the hob and the sink.
• Living rooms: pick out shelving, art or an alcove with accent light.

GU10, LED and dimming?

Most spotlights take GU10 bulbs, so you can swap the bulb and pick your own colour temperature, while some use integrated LED for a slimmer fitting. Choose warm white for a cosy feel or cool white for crisp task light, and pair them with a dimmer to change the mood.
