Accessories

Lighting accessories are the finishing pieces that complete a light: the bulbs that power it, the shades that dress it, and the cord sets that hang it. They're the small things that make a big difference, the right bulb changes how bright and warm a room feels, the right shade changes the whole look of a lamp, and a simple cord set turns a bare bulb into a feature. Whether you're finishing a new fitting or refreshing one you already have, this is where it all comes together.

What lighting accessories do you stock?

  • LED bulbs in every common fitting, GU10, E27, E14, B22 and G9, in warm and cool white, dimmable and decorative styles.
  • Lamp shades to refresh a lamp or pendant, in drum, empire and coolie shapes and every colour.
  • Cord sets to build your own bare-bulb pendant, with a ceiling rose, cable and lampholder ready to go.

Which bulb fitting do I need?

This is the question we're asked most, and it's the easiest to get right. Look at the base of your old bulb, or the empty socket, and match it: GU10 has two fat pins and twists in, used in spotlights and downlights. E27 is the larger screw and E14 the smaller screw, common in pendants, lamps and chandeliers. B22 is a bayonet you push and twist, the traditional Irish fitting, and G9 is a small capsule for wall lights and compact fittings.

Warm or cool white: which bulb colour?

Colour temperature sets the mood of a room. Warm white, around 2700 to 3000K, gives a cosy, relaxing glow that suits living rooms and bedrooms. Neutral and cool white, 4000K and up, is crisper and clearer, which is better for kitchens, bathrooms and task areas. A good rule is warm where you relax and cooler where you work, and keep the colour consistent across bulbs in the same room so the light looks even.

How do I choose the right shade?

Two things matter: the fit and the proportions. Check whether your fitting takes an easy-fit shade, which pushes straight onto a pendant holder, or a lamp shade that sits on a ring or frame above the bulb. For proportions, a shade looks balanced when it's around two-thirds the height of the lamp base and a little wider than the widest part of the base. A pale shade lets more light through for a brighter room, while a darker shade throws light up and down for a moodier feel. Browse the full range of lamp shades to see the shapes and colours.

Are LED bulbs and accessories dimmable?

Many are, but not all, so it's always worth checking. A dimmable LED bulb needs a compatible LED dimmer switch to run smoothly without flicker or buzz, so if you're planning to dim, match the bulb and the dimmer. Dimming is well worth it in living rooms, bedrooms and over a dining table, where you'll want bright light sometimes and a soft glow at others.

Can I build my own pendant?

Yes, and it's one of the easiest ways to get a designer look for less. A cord set gives you the ceiling rose, cable and lampholder in one, so you just add a bulb and hang it. Pair it with a decorative filament bulb for a warm, exposed-bulb look, or add an easy-fit shade for something softer. Group several cords at different heights over a table or island for a modern cluster. As with any wired fitting, have a qualified electrician install it.
