The E14 is the small screw-cap bulb, used in chandeliers, wall lights and smaller fittings all over the home. Often shaped like a candle, E14 LED bulbs give the same warm glow as the old filament versions on a fraction of the energy, and last for years. Choose one by its shape, its brightness in lumens and its colour temperature.
What is an E14 bulb?
E14 refers to the small Edison screw fitting, 14mm across, also known as SES (small Edison screw). You simply screw it into the socket. It's the smaller of the two common screw fittings, the larger one being the E27, so the number is just the width of the screw base in millimetres.
Where are E14 bulbs used?
E14 is the usual fitting for chandeliers and many wall lights, as well as smaller table lamps, bedside lamps and cooker hoods. If a fitting takes several small candle-shaped bulbs, it's almost always E14.
What shapes do E14 bulbs come in?
- Candle, the classic pointed shape for chandeliers and wall lights
- Golf / round, a small ball shape for lamps and pendants
- Globe, a larger round bulb for a softer look
- Decorative filament, vintage-style bulbs meant to be on show
How bright, and warm or cool white?
Go by lumens: a 4 to 5W LED E14 gives roughly the same light as an old 40W bulb. Warm white suits chandeliers, wall lights and living spaces for a cosy glow, while cool white is better where you want brighter, crisper light. In a multi-bulb chandelier, keep them all the same colour so the light looks even.
Are E14 bulbs dimmable?
Some E14 bulbs are dimmable and some aren't, so check the label before you buy, and pair a dimmable bulb with a compatible LED dimmer for smooth, flicker-free dimming. Dimmable candle bulbs are popular in chandeliers where you want to soften the light in the evening.
