LED strip lights are flexible strips of LEDs you can cut to length and fix almost anywhere: under kitchen cabinets, behind a TV, along shelves, coving and stairs. They come in single colours, warm and cool white, and RGB colour-change, and they're one of the cheapest, easiest ways to add accent light or hidden task light to a room.
What are LED strip lights?
A strip light is a long, flexible strip lined with small LEDs, usually with a self-adhesive back so it sticks straight to a surface. You cut it to length at marked points, and it runs off a driver, so it tucks neatly into coving, under a unit or behind a shelf where the strip itself stays hidden and only the glow shows.
Where can I use LED strip lights?
- Under kitchen cabinets for bright task light on the worktop
- Behind a TV or mirror for a soft backlight glow
- Along shelves and coving for accent lighting
- Stairs and plinths for a low guiding light
- Bathrooms, using an IP-rated strip near water

White or colour-change (RGB)?
For task and accent light, a single warm or cool white strip is usually all you need. RGB and RGBW strips add colour and colour-change for feature and mood lighting, and CCT strips let you adjust between warm and cool white. Choose white for practical jobs like worktops, and colour-change where you want a bit of fun or atmosphere.
What do I need to install strip lights?
Three things: the strip itself, a driver or transformer sized to the length you're running, and a controller if you want colour-change or dimming. Measure the run first so you buy enough, cut only at the marked points, and for anywhere near water choose an IP-rated strip. Longer runs may need the power fed from both ends to stay evenly bright.
