E27 LED Bulbs

The E27 is the large screw-cap bulb, one of the two most common household fittings in Ireland. It's the standard fitting for ceiling pendants, table and floor lamps, and everyday light fittings, and an LED E27 screws straight into the same socket as the old bulb it replaces, using far less energy and lasting for years.

What is an E27 bulb?

E27 refers to the large Edison screw fitting, 27mm across, also known as ES (Edison screw). You screw it into the socket. It's the bigger of the two common screw fittings, the smaller one being the E14, so the number is simply the width of the screw base in millimetres.

E27 or B22: which do I have?

The two most common household fittings look similar in size but attach differently. An E27 screws in, while a B22 is a bayonet you push and twist. Look at the base of your old bulb or the socket: a screw thread means E27, two side pins mean B22. Both are widely used in Irish homes.

Where are E27 bulbs used?

E27 is the usual fitting for ceiling pendants, table and floor lamps and standard household light fittings. If a light takes one larger bulb that you screw in, it's almost always E27.

How bright, and warm or cool white?

Go by lumens: an 8 to 9W LED E27 gives roughly the same light as an old 60W bulb, with around 800 lumens matching a traditional 60W. Warm white suits living rooms and bedrooms for a cosy glow, while cool white is brighter and better for kitchens and task areas.
