By Room

Every room is lit differently. A bedroom wants warm and restful light, a study wants crisp and bright, a stairwell needs to be safe and even, and a dining table calls for a statement overhead. Shopping by room is the simple way to find fittings suited to how you actually use each space, rather than guessing from a wall of products. Here's a room-by-room guide to lighting your home.

Why shop for lighting by room?

Because the job the light has to do changes from room to room. A working space like a study or utility needs bright, focused task light; a living room wants layers you can dim for the evening; a hall or stairwell needs safe, even light with no dark patches; and rooms with a table or a tall ceiling suit a statement fitting. Choosing by room points you straight at the right type of light, and the right colour, for the space.

Living and relaxing rooms

  • Living room – layered light from ceiling, lamps and wall lights, dimmable for any mood.
  • Dining room – a pendant or chandelier centred over the table.
  • Bedroom – soft warm light with bedside lamps for reading.
  • Kids' room – safe, fun fittings with a night light for bedtime.

Practical and working rooms

  • Kitchen – bright task light over worktops and the island.
  • Utility room – bright, hard-wearing light for laundry and jobs.
  • Study & home office – a good desk lamp plus even, glare-free background light.

Halls, stairs and tall spaces

  • Hallway – even light along the run, flush fittings for low ceilings.
  • Stairwell – a safe, well-lit staircase with a statement drop over the void.
  • Double-height ceiling – large chandeliers and long-drop pendants to fill the height.

Sunrooms and conservatories

Warm or cool white: which for each room?

As a rule of thumb, choose warm white (around 2700 to 3000K) for the rooms you relax in, living rooms, bedrooms, dining rooms and hallways, where a cosy glow suits the space. Choose cool or neutral white (4000K and up) for the rooms you work in, kitchens, utilities and studies, where crisp, clear light helps you see detail and stay focused. Rooms that do both, like a study that's also a spare room, work well with warm background light and a cooler task lamp.

How do I layer lighting in any room?

Whatever the room, the same three-layer principle works. Ambient light, usually from the ceiling, gives overall brightness; task light, from a lamp or spots, covers reading, cooking or working; and accent light, from wall lights or an uplighter, picks out features. Put the layers on separate switches and add a dimmer where you relax, and one room can shift from bright and practical to soft and warm at the flick of a switch.
