The B22 is the bayonet cap bulb, the traditional push-and-twist fitting found in homes all over Ireland. It's the classic fitting for ceiling pendants and lamps, and an LED B22 drops straight into the same socket as the old bulb it replaces, using far less energy and lasting for years. Choose one by its shape, brightness in lumens and colour temperature.
What is a B22 bulb?
B22, also known as bayonet cap or BC, has two small pins on the sides of the base. You push it into the socket and twist a quarter-turn to lock it in, with no screwing. It's the long-standing standard household fitting in Ireland and the UK, which is why so many older and standard fittings use it.
B22 or E27: which do I have?
The two most common household fittings look similar in size but attach differently. A B22 is a bayonet, you push and twist, while an E27 screws in. Look at the base of your old bulb or the socket: two side pins mean B22, a screw thread means E27. Both are widely used in Irish homes.
Where are B22 bulbs used?
B22 is the usual fitting for ceiling pendants, table and floor lamps and standard household light fittings. If a light takes one larger bulb that you push and twist rather than screw, it's a B22.
What shapes do B22 bulbs come in?
- Standard / GLS, the classic rounded bulb shape
- Globe, a larger round bulb for a softer, decorative look
- Candle, for fittings that suit a slimmer bulb
- Decorative filament, vintage-style bulbs meant to be seen
How bright, and warm or cool white?
Go by lumens: a 6 to 9W LED B22 gives roughly the same light as an old 40 to 60W bulb, with around 800 lumens matching a traditional 60W. Warm white
