Over Table & Island

Have some fun when choosing lighting for over a kitchen island, dining table, restaurant, or bistro. Our range covers stylish and innovative lighting, traditional to modern in all finishes including copper, bronze, aged brass, antique silver, transparent or textured glass and many more.

Cage lights, bar lights or individual pendants are all popular fittings for above an island or table. Most lights come with adjustable cables allowing them to be shortened, or rise and fall, up/down light can be adjusted as need be.

What should I consider when choosing a light for over my table or island?

Think about the size and shape of your kitchen island and select light fittings that are in proportion.

If you use your kitchen island for food preparation you will need to ensure you have enough bright task lighting to do the job safely. If it’s used for entertaining you may want a softer understated or ambient light. Kitchen islands can be multi-functional spaces and will need lighting that is versatile and adaptable. We would suggest that you use some of our affordable Luxram dimmable bulbs to achieve maximum functional use.

Most people use their kitchen island to create a focal point in the room. People usually dress their island with three individual pendants but this does not have to be the case, rules are made to be broken.

Ensure the fittings you choose for over your table or island are easy to clean and maintain. Choose glass and metal rather than fabric. Perhaps introduce a splash of colour via the fitting you choose, for example the Vibrant from Searchlight.

What size light should I choose for over my island or dinging table?

Consider ceiling height when choosing an over island/table light. 34/36 inches is the recommended distance from the bottom of the hanging light fitting to the surface of the table or island. This will of course depend on the size of the light fitting, larger hanging lights can be moved higher by shorting the cable while smaller hanging lights can be mover lower be extending the cable length.

We would recommend that a light over your dining table should be between a half to two thirds of the width of the table. Go bigger rather than smaller.
