Line them up with the centre of the island and keep equal gaps at each end.

How high should pendants hang over an island or table?

Hang pendants roughly 70 to 90cm above the worktop or tabletop. That's high enough to keep sightlines clear across the island and low enough to light the surface well and feel intimate. Over a dining table you can go a touch lower, since nobody's working under them. If in doubt, hang them, live with it for a day, then fine-tune.

• Bar and cluster lights hang several shades from one ceiling plate, so the spacing is done for you.
• Linear pendants are a single long fitting, ideal for a long island or a big table.
